Adara is a feminine Greek name meaning 'beauty'. My work is an exploration of beauty, form and spirituality as expressed through personal adornment. Working with both jewellery and fashion design, I see definite parallels between my aproach to both disciplines. Fluid lines, minimally textured surfaces and a limited colour palette are employed to focus on nature-based forms. These elements are dictated by the body, responding to its contours and movement through flexible construction and manipulation of the appropriate materials.
Apart from formal concerns, I am also intensely interested in the social significance of adornment. What we wear is a statement of who we are or wish to be, our role in society, and a reflection of the culture as a whole. This has certainly been my experience, as demonstrated by two major influences in my work - dance and the sea. Beauty and spirituality, cornerstones of my work, are wonderfully articulated by dance. Modern dance in particular is about expressive movement of the body; dynamic sculpture rather than mere decorative entertainment. I seek to create garments and jewelry that share that essence. Growing up on the tiny Caribbean island of Barbados, I was embraced and subtly defined by the sea. For me, it is a source of intricate, well-designed form - an environment where rhythmic, meditative sound, wonderful textures and an abundance of blue water help restore internal balance and reaffirm my relationship with God.
This blend of sensual and spiritual continues to resonate in my work. The body is the house of the spirit, and how we dress can be a reflection of that - adornment fostering wellness by being pleasant to see, touch and wear. |
